Ondo Students sack council over unpaid allowance
Some university students of Ondo State origin on Monday prevented the workers of the Akure South Local Government Area from entering into the secretariat as they protested against the non-payment of their book allowance.
The protesters, who were said to be law students of various universities across the country, gathered in front of the main gate of the council secretariat located on Ilesa Road, Akure, the state capital and lamented the refusal of the council to pay the allowance.
It was gathered that the law students had been receiving the allowance since the period of the immediate past administration of the council.
It was learnt that while the students’ protest was ongoing, the workers of the council who did not have access to their offices were asked to go back home.
some of the students were seen roasting corn in front of the gate of the council.
Men of the state police command were also seen at the gate.
The leader of the protesting students, Olaniyi Ogundipe, said the council owed the students book allowance running to N3m, alleging the leadership of the council did not take the payment seriously.
He said, “We decided to embark on this protest because it seems the council leadership does not want to pay the money.”
The Caretaker Chairman of the Akure South Local Government, Mrs Margret Atere, could not be reached on her mobile as an aide who picked the call said she was in a meeting
The Police Public Relations Officer of the command, Mr. Femi Joseph, said, “The students have a right to protest, but our own duty is to ensure they maintain law and order.
