@70: Oyemekun Grammar School Alumni Back Return Of School To Stakeholders
As the school clocks 70, the Oyemekun Grammar School, Akure Alumni Association has expressed support for key stakeholders to take over the runnings of the school from the Ondo state government.
The National Vice President of the Association, High Chief Olusegun Ogunjobi, who disclosed this in Akure while speaking with newsmen to kick start the 70th Anniversary of the school
High Chief Ogunjobi, said the key stakeholders like; the Anglican Church, the Akure community, the Oyemekun Grammar School Old Students Association and the Parent Teachers Association, are currently brainstorming with the state government to ensure that the most secondary school is run properly.
The Vice President, however, said government is doing its best but there is limitation while the Alumni is trying to aide the government in achieving its objective and educational programmes in the state.
In a remark, the Principal of the Oyemekun Grammar school, Mr Okeowo Ogunleye commended old students’ investment in students scholarship and infrastructural development at the school established in 29th January, 1953.
Speaking at the press conference, the National Vice President of the Association, High Chief Olusegun Ogunjobi, who disclosed this on Wednesday in Akure at the Press Conference to kick start the 70th Anniversary of the school, however, said what concerns them most
is how the school can be continue well managed in the state.
Ogunjobi said, “I’m very happy to tell you that we have been having stakeholders meeting and the stakeholders are; the Anglican Communion, the community, the Oyemekun Grammar School Old Students Association and the PTA and we have said it in the last meeting, we held that we would have common position which we will present to the state government.
“What concerns us most is how the school can be continue well managed, we are not talking about the owner now because the government cannot do everything and that is why they are looking at how they can give some schools back to the original owner and what we the Alumni had been doing is to bridge the gap of infrastructural deficit that the government could not do.”
While recall that the Akure community have also rejected the position to return the school back to the Anglican Church.
But Ogunjobi said, “And if they (government) now in their wisdom to give the school back to us, the stakeholders will be glad to take back the school.
“There are a lot of development we have recorded in the school, the school was taken over by the government some times in 1976, now the government is still looking at the possibility of handing over the school back to the stakeholders and we are in the process of taking over the school from the government.”

The school which was founded on 29th January, 1953, according to Ogunjobi, has achieved a tremendous infrastructural projects through the Alumni Association and Old students of the school.
The Alumni National Vice President of the school while highlighting the programme lined-up for the 70th Anniversary of the school said, “we have Compendium, Road Show/Homage to the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Aladelusi, who happens to be the founding father of the school, Career Talk, Novelty Match between the Oyemekun old students and Fiwasaye old students, we have commissioning of 7 projects and the projects started last year January.
The projects according to him include; “Construction of Principal Administration Block being donated by the incumbent President, Dr. Niyi Ijogun, Renovation of the old Adinlewa House, Remodeling of Pa. Ogunleye’s House, Remodeling of the long block in the school, Renovation of the school Canteen and the Commissioning of Volley Ball.”
He, however, said a total sum of #55.6 million have been spent on the ongoing projects being executed by the Alumni Association of the school so far.
“We thank God that we are celebrating the 70th anniversary of our school in funfair because you have to give back the little the school have given you back to the society,” he said.
