Akure Community Rejects Proposed Annex Status For State’s Specialist Hospital

Leaders of Akure the Ondo State capital has rejected the proposal by the implementation committee on health institutions in the state that proposed an annex status for the State Specialist Hospital in the ancient town.

The Sensitization and Mobilization sub-committee of the main Integration Committee had met with the Akure community at the Deji’s Palace during its maiden outing to engage them on the desire of the State Government at bringing the institutions under the auspices of the University of Medical Sciences, UNIMED, Ondo.

The sub-Committee, led by its Chairman, Mr. Alaba Isijola said the Committee was set up by the Ondo State governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu to interface with the people on the proposed integration so as to have their inputs and appropriately accommodate such into the final decision of government.

Isijola, who is also the Special Adviser to the Governor on Union Matters also informed the community that they were considering citing the hospital in Ondo while looking at making Akure an annex.

Speaking further on the proposed integration, the Chairman said, the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria has advised that all existing schools of Nursing and Midwifery be upgraded to a degree awarding institution through accredited affiliation.



He said, “Consequently, the Schools of Nursing and Midwifery, Akure; School of Health Technology, Akure will have to be affiliated to the University of Medical Sciences, UNIMED, Ondo.

“Also in a bid to get the students of UNIMED proceed to the clinical stage of their studies as required in Medical Education, a Teaching Hospital has to be in place.

“It is the desire of government to merge the State Specialist Hospital, Akure; State Specialist Hospital, Ondo; Psychiatric Hospital, Akure with all the facilities at the Medical Village , Ondo which include: Gani Fawehinmi Diagnostic Centre, Kidney Care Centre, Mother and Child Hospital, Trauma and Surgical Centre, to become the Teaching Hospital.”
