Police brutalise Adekunle Ajasin varsity students

 ONDO State Police Command has ordered full investigation into the alleged brutalisation of no fewer than 20 students of Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba Akoko, Ondo State by some policemen in their hostel. The state police commissioner, Gbenga Adeyanju, has promised to deal with any of his officers found culpable in the brutalisation of the innocent students. Some men of the state Police Command, attached to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad had yesterday invaded a hostel of the university and beat up students at about 4a.m. Many of students, who suffered injury of various degrees, were rushed to the hospital early yesterday. Eyewitness account had it that the “policemen invaded the hostel in a commando-like manner without any respect for the privacy of the students. Millions gone as fire razes 100 shops in Akure

Property and goods estimated at millions of naira were destroyed yesterday when a fire razed a section of Akure South Local Government secretariat, beside Deji’s palace in Akure, the Ondo State capital. It was learnt that over 100 lock-up shops were destroyed. Sources said the fire started from one of the shops around 1 a.m and spread to other shops. A victim, Ojo Owoeye, said he received a distress call around 1 a.m that shops were burning and he immediately rushed to the scene. A youth leader in Akure community, Tuyi Adekambi said: “The inferno started around 1 a.m as a result of power surge. The most annoying thing is that if we had functioning fire service in the state, the inferno wouldn’t have got to this extent. “For almost three hours, the fire service couldn’t get to the scene of the fire. Feeding programme: Parents of Ondo pupils decry stoppage of free meals

PARENTS of public school students in Ondo State have decried the stoppage of the daily feeding by government under the National Home Grown School feeding programme The stoppage of the free meal is coming few weeks after the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo visited the state and ate with the students of a public school in Alagbaka area of the state. It was gathered that the cooks engaged for the services stopped bringing food to the schools following huge debt incured by the government. Some pupils, who spoke confirmed that food vendors had stopped the free meal programme in the last two weeks.  The parents, under the auspices of Concerned Parents of Primary School Pupils described the programme as “a trick to deceive parents and primary school pupils in the state as the programme has failed to achieve its desired objectives within its first few weeks in the state.”  They alleged “that most of the cooks employed under the programme had stopped bringing food to schools.” Spe...

Former Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State on Thursday formally retraced his steps back into the Labour Party at a rally held in Ondo town, headquarters of Ondo West Local Government area of the state The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Mimiko had on Wednesday resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party via a letter submitted at the party’s secretariat in Akure.  The governor of Nigeria’s Ondo State, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu declared Tuesday, June 12, work free day in honour of late MKO Abiola, winner of the June 12, 1993, presidential election in the state. The State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Yemi Olowolabi, made the announcement in a signed statement on Saturday. The Deji of Akure, His Royal Majesty, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi, yesterday, called for the ending of geographical zoning in the determination of who should lead Nigeria as President and Commander-in-Chief. HRM Aladelusi made the call while receiving in his palace Professor Kingsley Moghalu, aspirant of the Young Progressive Party (YPP) in the 2019 presidential election. Moghalu was at the palace to pay a courtesy visit to the Deji of Akure. In an internal arrangement within then-ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) at the inception of the Fourth Republic in 1999, the presidency was to rotate between the northern and southern parts of the country, presumably every eight years. Ondo Students sack council over unpaid allowance

Some university students of Ondo State origin on Monday prevented the workers of the Akure South Local Government Area from entering into the secretariat as they protested against the non-payment of their book allowance. The protesters, who were said to be law students of various universities across the country, gathered in front of the main gate of the council secretariat located on Ilesa Road, Akure, the state capital and lamented the refusal of the council to pay the allowance.  It was gathered that the law students had been receiving the allowance since the period of the immediate past administration of the council. It was learnt that while the students’ protest was ongoing, the workers of the council who did not have access to their offices were asked to go back home. some of the students were seen roasting corn in front of the gate of the council. Ondo cries foul over bypass in rail routes by FG

Question are being raised as to why Ondo State was neglected by the Federal Government in the national railway development scheme. Akure and some economic centres in the state were bypassed by the Nigerian Railway Corporation, NRC, in the construction of rail lines across the states in the South- West. Of concern to the people was that Ondo State was the only state that was left out of the proposed railway route that is expected to pass through the South-West by the NRC.  Feasibility studies on the construction of 10 new standard gauge rail lines across the country were recently carried out by NRC following Federal Government’s directives. According to the NRC, the standard gauge rail lines will cover a travelling distance of over 3, 421 kilometres when completed. Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State will surpass his predecessors’ achievements in the area of infrastructure development, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state has said. Prince Abayomi Adesanya, the party’s Publicity Secretary, gave the assurance while receiving an award of Outstanding Media Man of the Year 2018 in Akure. Hospital-Ijoka Road dualisation, Ondo Govt, Deji of Akure meet residents

As plans are in top gear  to commence the dualisation of the 7.8kilometer Hospital/Ijoka road, the state government has held a meeting with the people of the area. The state’s Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Rt. Hon. Taofiq Abdusallam led government’s  team to the meeting while the city’s traditional ruler, the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladelusi Ogunlade Aladetoyinbo and his High Chiefs also led the people in Akure to the meeting held at the city’s town hall. The Commissioner said the purpose of the meeting was to inform the people about the dualisation of the road and to seek their cooperation so as to ensure success. He noted that the road is too narrow considering the upsurge in the number of people plying it, hence the reason for the dualisation.
