Over 20 Burnt to Death in Ondo Auto Crash

An auto accident involving two vehicles along Epinmi/Isua Akoko in Akoko South East Local Government Area of Ondo State had left over 20 person roasted to death. The accident, which also left many other people seriously injured, happened yesterday involving a 14-seater commercial bus heading towards Lagos had a head on collision with an unregistered vehicle heading towards Abuja. An eyewitness explained that the accident occurred when the driver of the unregistered Tokunbo Range Rover SUV, driven by a  military officer, overtook some  cars along the Epinmi road and rammed into the on coming commercial bus. He said the two caught fire immediately after the collision while most of the passengers in the   commercial vehicle were trapped in the inferno. He said it took the intervention of the residents of the community to rescue some of the victims while some of the passengers were burnt beyond recognition. Akure Monarch, Falae Urge FG to Include our city in Railway Route

The Deji of Akure Kingdom, Ondo State, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi, Odundun II, and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Chief Olu Falae, have called on the federal government to include Akure in the proposed railway route that is expected to pass through the South-west. The monarch stated this while inaugurating the Odun Ulefunta/Oyemekun 2018 Committee at his palace during the weekend. The advertised route of the railway is said to be from Calabar-Uyo-Aba- PH- Yenagoa-Otuoke-Ughelli-Warri-Sapele-Agbor-Asaba-Onitsha-Benin-Ore-Ijebu-Ode-Sagamu-Lagos. While raising concern on the publicized putative route of the railway as indicated in several media reports, he said it will be a great disservice to the people of Ondo State and will equally place it at great economic disadvantage if the railway does not pass through the state capital. FUTA students raise alarm over police harrassment

STUDENTS of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, have raised the alarm over the incessant harassment and breach of their constitutional rights by men of the Nigerian Police Force in Akure, Ondo state capital. Addressing newsmen on Monday, in Akure, the Center for Human Right President, David Belele, said the alarm became imperative to stop the constant harassment from the security operatives in the state. Belele also called on the security operatives to stay off from the campus and desist from intimidating them but should report any criminal minded students to the school authorities. Students are reportedly prepared to drop out over tuition hike

Some students of Adekunle Ajasin University may choose to drop out as state government increases their tuition fee from N35k to N180k. Following the tuition fee hike at Adekunle Ajasin University in Ondo State, some indigent students are reportedly prepared to withdraw from the institution due to their inability to pay their new fees. According to Akure News, following the tuition hike, which was   increased from N30,000 to N180,000 , some students have allegedly shunned the ongoing registration, which is billed to end on Saturday, May 26, 2018. One of the students of the University,  Richard Olaosebikan , who spoke with newsmen said he was yet to pay the new school fees, as he is still struggling to meet up. FUTA Develops Solar Powered Generator

As a way of improving its Renewable Energy effort to de-emphasize dependence on the national grid, the Centre for Renewable Energy Technology (CRET) of the Federal University of Technology, Akure has developed solar-powered generators- FUTA Solar Box I and FUTA Solar Box 2.The generators of various capacities which components include Lithium Polymer Battery, Inverter, Change Controller, Socket Outlet, Fuse and Switches can power Television set, fan and a number of bulbs for a minimum of five hours at a go.   Presenting the generators to the University Management led by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Joseph Fuwape, the Director, CRET, Professor Olurinde Lafe, represented by the Associate Director, Professor Moses Awodun said the idea behind the generator was to alleviate the energy challenge being experienced by Nigerians. Ondo set to join rice producers, says Akeredolu

Efforts by Ondo State Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN) to make the state a major player in rice production have received a boost. The governor has also pledged to assist farmers to assess loans from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to enable them cultivate 500 hectares for rice production. Akeredolu, who spoke when management of the Sunshine Rice Mill, led by its Managing Director, Mr. Akeem Alade, gave an update on activities of the firm at the Governor’s Office in Akure, the capital, assured farmers that nothing will hinder his administration’s plan to put the state in the league of mass rice producers. The governor told the management of the rice mill to visit his office for intervention in case the firm had issues with CBN. APC Congress: Ondo lawmaker, group accuse Akeredolu of imposition

The lawmaker representing the Ifedore / Idanre federal constituency, at the House of Representatives, Hon. Bamidele Baderinwa,  on Thursday , alleged the  Ondo state governor, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu, of scheming to impose candidates at the ward congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC) holding  on Saturday . Also, some interest groups within the state APC said the governor and the Acting Chairman of the party in the state, Mr Ade Adetimehin has concluded arrangements to disenfranchise some members of the party in order to pave the way for their anointed candidates at the forthcoming ward congress. Rainstorms destroy houses, properties in Akure and its environments

Many buildings and shops were destroyed by rainstorms in Akure City and its environment in Ondo State on Friday and Saturday. The rainstorms in the affected areas have rendered many residents homeless and properties worth millions of naira were destroyed. Some of the affected places  are Akure Mother and child hospitals at the state capital,  sone houses at oba adesida road ,Oba Ile, Okitipupa, Igbotako, Ilutitun, Ikoya and Omotoso among others.  It was gathered that some houses and shops in the affected areas had their roofs blown off by the rainstorms while many electric poles and Internet masts fell on buildings and some of the poles fell across the roads. However, there was no report of a death.

Osinbajo flags off market power project in Akure

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo flagged off the pilot project of a special intervention in energising markets as productive clusters at Isinkan market, Akure, the Ondo State capital.  The federal government project being powered by the National Rural Electrification Agency and Ondo State Government’s Office of Public Utilities, was aimed at ensuring power supply in all markets across the state. Osibanjo explained that the project will boost micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME-s) in the country. According to him, “We are focusing on major markets across the country to put an end to power problem. We are working at Ariria Market in Aba, likewise Sabongeri Market in Kano and we are focusing on markets in Lagos as well. Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State says athletes from the state who won medals at the just concluded Commonwealth Games in Australia will be rewarded. Akeredolu disclosed this during a fund raiser and inauguration of the National Athletics Development Centre by the Nigeria Sports Development Fund Inc. (NSDFI) on Monday evening in Akure “Going to the Commonwealth and winning medal is not easy, that is what the minister of sports said. “If each state had won two medals at the event, the country should have topped the medals table,” he said. The coach and athletes to be rewarded are Purity Akuh, a wrestling coach with the State Sports Council and national coach, Aminat Adekuroye and Odunayo Adeniyi, gold medal winners as well as Bose Samuel, a bronze medalist. The athletes won medals in the wrestling event at the Games.
